The Role of the State Attorney General - Harvard Law School -Spring, 2021

Shevin, ex. rel.Florida v. Exxon Corp.

One of the few federal decisions dealing the authority of a state attorney general to litigate without express statutory authority is found in the oft cited case of  Shevin v. Exxon Corporation, 526 F2nd 266 (5th Cir, 1976).  Shevin also cites English precedent in describing how the position of state attorney general is grounded in the common law.
