Criminal Justice Reform, Police Misconduct, and Charities: April 3, 2023
This week the first half of class will consider criminal justice reform and police misconduct, and the second half of class will consider the AG’s role in regulating charities and non-profit organizations. We will be joined at the outset by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who has been at the forefront of criminal justice reform, along with other issues.
As the state’s chief law enforcement officer, AGs frequently are involved in criminal justice efforts, as a matter of legislative action, prosecutorial discretion, or defending the state. Likewise, as states grapple with the issue of police misconduct, many of the proposed solutions involve the AG.
Charities and non-profit organizations are critical components of the national economy, but because they lack shareholders and the for-profit motivations (although the lines increasingly may be blurred), they are often lightly regulated. In many states, the AG is only regulator of this enormous segment of society.
